Micron announced yesterday local time the world’s first 61.44TB PCIe 5.0 solid-state drive 6550 ION, which is also the fastest SSD of the same capacity level.
The 6550 ION comes in two capacity versions: 30.72TB and 61.44TB, and is available in three form factors: U.2, E1.L , and E3.S-1T (7.5mm) . It is based on Micron’s G8 (IT Home Note: 232 layers) TLC NAND flash memory, has a single PCIe 5.0×4 port, complies with the NVMe 2.0b protocol, and is the first model in the 61.44TB product class to support the OCP 2.5 specification.
In terms of performance, the 6550 ION can reach sequential read and write speeds of 12000MB/s and 5000MB/s respectively, and random read and write speeds of 1600K IOPS and 70K IOPS respectively, with a read latency of 70µs; in terms of endurance, it has a 5-year warranty, and can reach 1 DWPD under 100% 128KB sequential write and 100% 16KB random write, and 0.3 DWPD under JESD219A mixed load .
Micron said the 6550 ION offers excellent storage density: a 1U rack can accommodate 20 E3.S-1T units with a capacity of 61.44TB , for a total storage capacity of over 1.2PB; while a 2U rack can accommodate 40 E3.S-1T units, which is 67% more than the 24 units in the U.2 unit.
